Public Program 2020
Heerz Tooya is an artist-run non-commercial gallery dedicated to contemporary art. The gallery aims at promoting Bulgarian contemporary artists in the international field, as well as introducing international artists to the Bulgarian audience. In the year 2020 Heerz Tooya will continue its monthly exhibition program in Veliko Turnovo. In 2020 there will also be initiated an extended public program which collaborates with other Bulgarian cultural institutions, writers, curators and artists. One evening each month at the end of each exhibition executed at Heerz Tooya, an event will be arranged for the public to attend. Each event will be artist talks, screenings, panel discussions, or performances. The main idea is to invite the public to meet the exhibiting artists and other cultural producers so to understand contemporary art, its international context and values better. It is an inclusive way to provide a clear and deeper insight into each artist's conceptual framework and open up for further reflection. It is also a way for Heerz Tooya to broaden, educate and explore new audiences.
The main aim of the project is to broaden the understanding of contemporary art. The curatorial motivation behind the Public Program 2020 goes as follow: The contemporary art scene needs a reality check as much as reality needs an escape from itself. In other words, the question is how to fill the gaps within the different contemporary art circles and anchor the integrity of the arts with a pedagogical and educational approach with the public.
In addition to the Public Program at Heerz Tooya, other venues will be included in the Public Program in 2020, such as the University of Arts (V. Turnovo), Museum of Humor and Satire (Gabrovo), Blå (Oslo, Norway), Souterrain14 (Amsterdam, Netherlands) and TAM (V. Turnovo). These events will function as the same way as the events at Heerz Tooya, but located in a different situation with a different audience. Working together with cultural institutions and cultural producers in other cities in Bulgaria and Europe is not only a contributing factor to the decentralization of the contemporary art scene in Bulgaria as well as in Europe. It also makes various audiences and institutions to cross paths and paves way for unexpected connections and untold stories.
The end of the Public Program in August 2020 will result in a book. In addition to photo documentation from the exhibitions executed in 2019 and 2020, the book will include extensive texts by invited writers such as Kjetil Røed, Hanna Gjelten Hattrem, Viktoria Draganova, Luchezar Boyadjiev, Kristoffer Zeiner Christiansen, and Lars Nordby. Their approach is to unveil what it involves to initiate and justify an art project like Heerz Tooya in Bulgaria; contextualize an untold connection with Europe, specifically Norway and the Netherlands; and anchor the individual exhibitions made in 2019 with the Public Program. The book will be edited, coordinated and designed by Lars Nordby.
